    ISSUES: Rep. Jeff Landry

    AGAINST

    Taxes

    $
One of the key issues in tax reform is whether Big Business tax breaks should be repealed, and which organizations should enjoy nonprofit status.

    DETAILS:

    AGAINST Republicans

Republicans are against hypertaxation on any class or industry. They want to ensure past abuses against businesses, individuals, non-profits, and others are never repeated by the tax system. In regards to overseas businesses, they advocate for a territory based taxation- which will tax money made and stored abroad by American businesses and organizations. source

    FOR Democrats

Democrats want to end tax breaks for large businesses and add tax penalties for companies that send their businesses, production, and funding overseas. They focus on increasing tax breaks to the lower- and middle-income families in order to lighten the cost of living burdens. source

    AGAINST

    Voting

There are various aspects to voting that are in contention. Two popular topics are securing the ballots and if a popular vote should replace electoral votes.

    DETAILS:

    AGAINST Republicans

Against Popular vote. Republicans support greater transparency, stronger security, and a paper ballot. They strongly oppose a popular vote because they feel it would make ballot boxes and technology more vulnerable to exploitation. source

    FOR Democrats

For popular vote. Democrats support further funding of HAVA and updating equipment to support more secure paper ballots. They believe everyone has a right to vote, including people who have already served their time for past legal transgressions. There is also a movement to push for a National Popular Vote instead of an electoral vote because it is more in line with the voice of those voting. source

    AGAINST

    Abortion

An ongoing controversy about the moral, legal, and religious status of induced abortion. The hottest point of contention lies in which should receive the higher priority when a woman decides not to carry a fetus to term: The woman or the fetus?

    DETAILS:

    AGAINST Republicans

Republicans focus on the rights and safety of the unborn. Goals focus on restrictions and bans of induced abortions to advocate for the life of the fetus.

    FOR Democrats

Democrats focus on the rights and safety of the woman. Goals focus on the woman’s right and ability to choose whether they should carry a fetus to term.

    AGAINST

    Diversity

Diversity refers to differences in racial or ethnic classifications, age, gender, religion, philosophy, physical abilities, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, or any other distinguishing factor. Most politicians are in favor of diversity. They differ on whether diversity should be legislated.

    DETAILS:

    AGAINST Republicans

Republicans primarily protest diversity propositions because they feel the measures would force businesses to hire and give promotions based on race, gender, and other factors instead of skills and accomplishments. They also feel the focus on diversity creates divisive labels rather than an inclusive atmosphere. source

    FOR Democrats

Democrats back the bill to repeal wealthy business tax cuts to fund proactive measures like education and a diverse resume pool that businesses can use to find qualified and diversified candidates. source
