News Newsom stakes his political future on beating the pandemic by June

by Brandon Scott

It’s the teachers union.

He’s proposing a $1 billion tax increase, tied to a new teacher contract that would give teachers raises of 20 percent over three years and provide health insurance coverage for retirees.

Teachers say they support the idea of better pay and more benefits, but not at the expense of other services. They say the tax increase would force cuts in other areas such as transportation and public safety. Teachers also say they don’t like being told what to do by politicians.

Teachers are strong supporters of Newsom, who is running for his second term in office. But with a 20 percent raise over three years, they don’t think they can afford to keep supporting him after he leaves office.
